The founder of My Care Directory, Ceri James, graduated from Plymouth University in 1997 as a teacher with BEd (hons) 2:1 in Mathematics. In 2003 she changed career path and went into the care industry.
“Since 2003 I have been working on a self employed basis in the care industry as a PA and in that time I have witnessed a big drive by the government to out source or commission community care services. They are encouraging care in the community to be self directed, where possible, which ultimately means that people find their own care providers and manage their care needs themselves. Anyone who has come through the system and is eligible for funding now has the option to receive Direct Payments to pay for the care they have chosen. Essentially these have been my clients who I have been caring for.
In 2012 I found that the demand for PAs/carers such as myself was so great that my role changed and I increasingly became a central point of contact and support service for people who were looking for carers and also for carers who were looking for community work. I matched them up according to criteria and eventually formed databases of carers that I certified and databases of people searching for carers. Hence the name My Care Directory.
For the future….. I believe one very effective way to enhance the ethos of promoting autonomy, personalized care and independence is to offer the services via a website so that it becomes an interactive tool for users to use as a search engine to look for carers and as a vehicle for carers to gain exposure to offer their services. My vision would then be to use the profits and reinvest them so that I could offer befriending services for the elderly.”
